Following its successful launch in 2025, Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre (BALC) is excited to announce the return of the Inland Water Safety Program in January 2026.
Designed to build essential lifesaving and water safety knowledge for children aged 6 – 14 years in open water environments, this 3-day program focuses on real-world safety skills rather than traditional swimming strokes.
Structured to suit different ages and abilities, the program begins at BALC, before moving to the open water of Lake Wendouree on days 2 & 3 (weather permitting) for hands-on experience.
Participants will learn how to make informed risk assessments in natural water settings, survival and rescue techniques, efficient movement through water using practical tools like boogie boards, and emergency response basics through interactive activities.
BALC Aquatic Education Team Leader, Leanne White, says this program is essential for any families that spend time around water.
“As a nation, we love spending time at lakes and rivers, but these environments can be unpredictable. This program aims to give kids the confidence to enjoy the water safely and build skills that could save lives, not just for themselves but others too.”
Sadly, 121 drowning deaths occurred at inland water ways in 2024/25, a 23% increase on the 10-year average. Rivers/creeks were the leading drowning location for this period.
The Inland Water Safety Program runs from 19 – 21 January 2026. For more information, including program costs and to enrol, please click here.
